I get most of the rest of the sidebar, but what's wrong with Libertarians? (I know almost nothing about them, for the record, so I thought I'd ask.)
libertarians believe that if we would stop paying for the poor to eat food and have medical care, a magic world would open up for all of us wherein no one starves to death and all the roads repair themselves. because freedom.
it is the “common sense” of a young, wealthy white dude whose parents make all his problems go away.
Reblogging for the best summary of libertarianism I’ve sever seen.

Polish doctor that refused to perform abortion named a “hero”
Dr Bogdan Chazan was visited by an expecting mother (32 weeks into pregnancy), who already had 5 miscarriages before and was worried about her health. It turned out that the fetus had hydrocephalus, undeveloped brain and was missing many bones from its skull. The Doctor refused to perform an abortion and didn’t send the woman to another hospital which could do so (according to polish law, if a doctor doesn’t want to perform an abortion, he has to choose another hospital which will agree to do so). Chazan was named a “local hero” and “true warrior of Jesus in the name of life of the unborn” by many polish politicians and catholic activists. He used conscience clause as an excuse for his actions.
The woman gave birth to the child through a C-section. She and her husband spent 10 painful days watching their deformed child die a horrible death. When she finally decided to speak out, she said:
“During these 10 days, no priest, no pro life activist or even dr Chazan came to see the child, to ask if they can help. It was really hard to look at our child. We knew what was coming, but it was still very hard to cope with”
Congratulations, pro-lifers - another “life” saved, another “happy” child and “happy” family.
But these people are ‘for life’ and don’t want people do suffer. Fuck every one of these fuckholes. I hate them all.
This is horrifying.
What an evil man, lack of compassion is the work of the devil, not of Jesus, fuck this guy
This is how Poland looks like.

the state college in my city's tuition is a little less than $9,000 this coming year
Does your country really not want you to get an education or something??
College here was about $3000 a year for me and your currency is about 3x mine.
Thank god I’m not gonna do vet med in America. I’d starve before my first semester is over.
Btw the $3000 is in my currency. For Americans, college here would be about $1000.
$9000 is actually kinda low for America,
I attended a fairly cost effective school, at about $13,000 USD a year.
And yes, the US has some weird thing about not wanting anyone to learn anything ever. Our entire educational system is a disaster.
I really shouldn’t do this to you, because it’s cruel, but… Some schools in this country cost as much as $48,000 USD.
That’s why 9000-13000 reads as a “reasonable” price tag.
I’m very happy I’m never going to school in America.
What about scholarships though???
They exist, certainly, but if you aren’t already in a position of affluence, it can be very difficult to qualify for them. They have higher standards for entry than the schools themselves, and often require significant commitments in time, through interviews, background checks, volunteer hours, essays, etc.
There are thousands of tiny scholarships that are easier to get, $500, $1000 maybe, which you can qualify for through, say, writing a five page essay about a weird obscure topic like the impact a gold course has on the high school graduation rates around it (that’s a real scholarhsip that was offered to me at one point, for $400), but it’s not going to make a real impact on your tuition costs.
If you get a scholarship from your school, usually because you play a sport for them, that’s different. There’s still a lot of problems with that system, but it’s better than the average kid gets.
The best bet you have is to pick a combination of a cheap school, and federal aid. The trouble there being, federal aid lasts four years, and the average graduation rate is about 6 years these days, meaning you’ve still got two years of school where you’ll be hard pressed to get the money you need. In addition, a lot of stuff will disqualify you from being able to receive federal aid, based primarily around your parents’ previous work history.
Also, if you’re looking to attend a school outside your home state, you can go ahead and assume the costs will be doubled, because there are “out of state” fees.
The only real “option” for most people is to take out a loan from the government which puts you in debt for basically the rest of your life
My friend just pointed that out. And that by the time she pays it off the years she spent college would be obsolete and she’d have to go back.
Does your government help you get scholarships to schools in other countries?
I don’t think so. We have IB courses but those are at select schools.
When my family overseas heard about the mess that is the US higher education system, they offered to try and help me apply for schools in their countries, and I can assure you from first hand experience, the US makes it as hard as they can for you to study abroad, too.
i had wanted to study abroad for a semester or two but because my major had a “rigid structure” to it, if i fucked off to europe for any amount of time, there was no guarantee i would be able to take comparable courses that the school would accept in place of my major requirements, and so i would be at least a semester behind, if not more. not to mention some of the programs did dates that didn’t match up with our school dates here - which is fair, everyone has their own system and there’s no point in complaining about who’s right on what dates you should be in school - but then if i just went for one semester starting in october i’d be back in something like march and that’s real useful, get some of each semester and then question if what you did is going to further you in any way in your credits.
also don’t ever take out private loans, i regret ever listening to my family on that one and will probably regret it until i’m dead.
IM FUCKING SCREAMING
